English Golden Retriever - Belle

(for complementary boating products such as 12v lighting control and 12v motorized blinds and shades, see our RV & boat automation DIY kit store)

English Golden RetrieverOur English Golden Retriever - Belle - comes with us virtually everywhere we go, and the boat is no exception. Born on Christmas Eve, we just recently celebrated her 4th birthday party, and a good time was had by all.

Her puppy picture on the right was taken at six weeks, on the day that we brought her home. We were so excited, and it was very emotional - I'll never forget that day! Being the alpha female that she is, she started our training right away, and she's pretty stern about it.English Golden Retriever puppy picture She's a creature of routine habit, and she expects us to understand and participate in her various daily rituals; she can be very tendentious at times ...

On the sailboat, Belle is very good at staying out of the way, and she's even learned to pace her liquid and food consumption so that she has time in the morning for us to take her ashore in our tender for some digestive relief.

English Golden Retriever picture - BelleAt first, it was a struggle for her to go below and come back up again, but she adapted well by learning to take a flying leap to go down the companionway, and then to get back up topsides again, she figured out how to put her front paws over the lip of the door in order to pull herself up while using her rear legs on the nearly vertical ladder. Talk about adaptable!

She loves to swim any chance she gets and if you combine that with a ball throw, well, she's in seventh Heaven and will play with you all day ...

She's also great with kids, and they often 'adopt' her for a period of playtime when we're relaxing on a beach somewhere. Find a stick to throw, and it's 'game on' time for as long as you want.

She's not trained as a rescue dog, but if anyone is in trouble on land or in the water, she's the first one to jump in and get there to help. She's a very strong swimmer and is quite capable of pulling an adult or child to safety while they hold on to her tail.
